Patal Bhubaneswar Temple situated in Pithoragarh district is a major tourist center of the state of Uttarakhand. The temple is situated 160 km away from the famous town of Almora in the Kumaon division of Uttarakhand in the middle of dense forests. The Patal Bhubaneshwar cave is no less surprising. It is 160 meters long and 90 feet deep from the entrance. According to the beliefs of Patala Bhubaneswar, it was discovered by Adi Jagat Guru Shankaracharya. One can also perform Darshan of Kedarnath, Badrinath and Amarnath in this cave.
A glimpse of mythological history of Patal Bhubaneshwar
The Skandpurana describes that Mahadev Shiva Patala himself resides in Bhubaneswar and other deities come here to praise him. It is also described that when Rituparna, the Suryavanshi king of Ayodhya, entered the cave chasing a wild deer in Treta Yuga, he saw 33 crore gods including Mahadev Shiva inside this cave. According to the Puranas, there is no place other than Patal Bhubaneshwar where the four dhams are seen together. This sacred and mysterious cave itself has centuries of history. It is believed that 33 crore deities have made their abode in this cave. It is said in Manusmriti that Lord Shankar used to do penance only in Kailash. Vishnuji chose this place for him to spend his time.
